The award recognises the impact of Myriam's research in establishing the importance of the placenta in maintaining a succesful pregnancy. Research led by Myriam as part of the Wellcome Trust-funded “Deciphering the Mechanisms of Developmental Disorders (DMDD)” consortium and published in Nature in 2018, linked placental defects in mouse embryos with severe developmental defects. This research was instrumental in demonstrating that placental development and abnormal embryo development were much more closely linked than previously thought (see the press releaese: Placenta defects key factor in prenatal deaths). Myriam is now Professor in the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Medical Genetics at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, Canada.
