Schools & Teachers

The Institute has a long-standing commitment to engage schools locally, nationally and internationally, with our largest schools event ‘Schools’ Day’. We aim to inspire, excite and enthuse the next generation of scientists, sharing our passion for the wonder of scientific discovery and demonstrating the broad range of career opportunities available in the life sciences.

Our schools engagement programme spans all of our research areas; epigenetics, cell signalling and immunology, as well as encompassing our state-of-the-art scientific facilities to enrich learning for students of all ages and provide teachers with the opportunity to keep up to date with innovative research and technology.

We provide a range of opportunities for students and teachers, from visits to the Institute’s world-class laboratories and scientific facilities to researcher-led talks and hands-on activities. We also work to raise awareness of career opportunities in the life sciences; participating in careers events and offering work experience placements and teacher training placements throughout the year.

For Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9), we work with Form the Future and Cambridge LaunchPad to deliver careers and hands-on science activities for local schools. Through our BioInspire programme, we also aim to broaden our reach to schools in underserved communities, offering bespoke workshops in schools, visits to the Institute, and giving young people from these areas the opportunity to complete a Youth STEMM Award.

For Key Stages 4 and 5 (Years 10-13), we offer researcher talks and events such as our annual Schools' Day and Sixth Form Conference. We have a particular aim to engage with schools in areas of higher deprivation within the local area, and our BioInspire programme also offers activities for students at this level. We offer work experience placements to Year 12 students through the In2Science programme.

Finally, we have developed a range of resources, including videos, games, presentations and hands-on activities that can be used to support classroom learning from Years 3 to 13.
