In 2018 the Institute continued to work towards our mission of making discoveries that have the potential to improve lifelong health and wellbeing, in line with BBSRC’s Strategic Priority of ‘Bioscience for Health’. Highlights of the year included welcoming three new group leaders to the Institute’s Immunology programme, several outstanding research achievements, and the award of a second Silver Athena SWAN award recognising the progress made in embedding equality and diversity. The Institute also came together to showcase the Institute’s epigenetics research at the 2018 Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition with our ‘Race Against the Ageing Clock’ exhibit. The report’s three feature articles present Professor Adrian Liston, Dr Claudia Ribeiro de Almeida and Dr Sarah Ross and their research foci as they join the expertise residing within the Immunology programme, take a look at the quantum leap occurring within the lipidomics field and the insights this is revealing, and reflect on how big data is altering the very nature of scientific discovery.
