Niall has recently joined the University of Liverpool as a lecturer in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Cell Signalling after completing an independent fellowship in Newcastle University. His research is focussed on defining cell signalling pathways that enable cancer cells to adapt to hypoxic stress through targeted control of protein translation. He will be discussing work ongoing in the lab investigating the role of the oncoprotein YB-1 in promoting preferential protein translation of key mRNAs in hypoxic tumour cells. He will also describe the genome editing approaches the lab is currently using to uncouple specific mRNAs from translational control, giving insights into the role of preferential protein translation in the hypoxic tumour environment.
