A variety of environmental stressors and infections cause global transcriptional downregulation in human cells, a phenomenon we termed as Stress-Induced Transcriptional Attenuation (SITA). In the talk, I will discuss our work on understanding the mechanism underlying SITA that has led us to uncover novel nuclear condensates formed by liquid-liquid phase separation. Similar transcriptional downregulation is also seen in lung cells upon SARS -CoV-2 infection, identifying therapeutic avenues.
