We invited Dr. Claartje Vinkenburg for International Women's Day 2022 to provide an inspirational talk on bias in (life) science and how to mitigate bias in careers and culture. In this talk you will learn more about what bias is, why it results in cumulative career (dis)advantage in research institutions, how to recognize in yourself and others, and how to mitigate its effects. Bias has an impact on critical career transitions but can also affect lab culture in various (sometimes not so) subtle ways.
Dr. Claartje Vinkenburg is an independent expert consultant specialized in (gender) diversity and inclusion in research careers based in Amsterdam. Claartje spent 25 years at Northwestern U, ESADE, and VU Amsterdam, building her expertise on bias and inequality, including linguistic bias and othering. Her work was funded by the European Research Council and she recently designed the “inclusive assessment” program for the Dutch Research Council (NWO), focusing on process optimization in grant evaluation. She has worked with Communities of Practice in Life Sciences and Physics institutions to develop and implement systemic diversity interventions.
